Atlanter is back. The band that coined the genre viddeblues—and proved that prog-infused, kraut-leaning world music can be both explosive and infectious—will release their third album in 2026.
The innovative quartet’s 2013 debut Vidde, received critical acclaim and was nominated for both the Spellemann Award and the Nordic Music Prize. It’s a worn-out cliché to say that a band has created its own genre or musical universe, but in the case of the eminent musicians Jonas Barsten, Jens Carelius, Arild Hammerø, and Morten Kvam, it happens to be true. There is nothing else that sounds like Atlanter.
Klokker presents a band that has retained all of its playfulness and exploratory spirit. The music is expansive, conjuring vast mental panoramas for the listener. It evokes travel—landscapes rushing past at high speed—as the hypnotic rhythm section of Kvam and Barsten gallops along the railway tracks. The intricate and distinctive guitar work of Carelius and Hammerø draws references ranging from African desert blues to German krautrock and Norwegian folk traditions.
By 2026, it has been ten years since the band’s previous album, Jewels of Crime. In the meantime, the members have focused on solo careers and other projects, but Atlanter was never disbanded. In their own words:
“This record is rooted in the pure joy of playing. We’ve all missed the simplicity of Atlanter—no tracks, no in-ears, no concept, just four people bringing their own preferences and instruments into the room. That mindset has also shaped the recording process, with all the songs emerging through exploration and jams.”
Thematically, the album also represents a natural progression, as the musicians have grown older:
“As band members, we’re now in our forties, and our lives are obviously very different from the last time we released music. This is clearly reflected in the lyrics. Klokker as an album title stems from the existential and reflective themes that often become more pronounced at this stage of life compared to earlier years. At the same time, we’re now old enough to know what we want, without feeling the need to dress up or polish the expression, the production, or anything else.”
